The Living House is hoping to become the first Living Building Challenge (LBC) certified residential building in New Zealand. The Living Building Challenge is an international rating tool that is attempting to dramatically raise the bar from a paradigm of doing less harm to one in which we view our role as steward and co-creator of a true Living Future. Projects that achieve Living Building Status can claim to be the greenest anywhere, and will serve as role models for others that follow.

The house also has a 10 Homestar Design Rating, is targeting Passive House certification and 5 Star Lifemark. It will be the first house worldwide to achieve all of these ratings!

The Living House is being built by Joel and Rochelle Payne who intend to live there with their 2 children Isabella and Nicolas.

The Living House has been designed by award winning green building architect Phil Smith from Collingridge and Smith architects.

The Living House will have the following key design features of interest:

  • Be 100% off grid, generating all of its own power through PVs and wind turbines, with an electric car as well.

  • Be 100% off grid in terms of water supply and sewage treatment. The Living House is the first suburban dwelling to have been awarded a discharge consent by Auckland Council enabling us to target LBC certification

  • Have composting toilets and a greywater treatment and discharge system.

  • Have a green roof with expansive views of the sea

  • Be made of rammed earth

  • Use only sustainable sourced and green building materials.

  • Be one of the first biophilically designed  residential building in NZ
