The Parklands House reinstates the previous earthquake damaged house. It was built in 6 months from consent to practical completion.
The existing house on this site was damaged and settled as a repair with the insurer. Only the earthquake money received from the settlement was used to create this house. The owners wanted the replacement to demonstrate a high performance energy efficient house can replace a less efficient house for the same money even though a rebuild settlement was not achieved,
The solution to best utilise the budget to achieve the projects goals was to use SIPs (Structurally Insulated Panels) to create a warm, comfortable dry home.
The thickness of the walls and roof give the building a solidity that feels unique. The roof panels are 377mm and the wall panels are 215mm
The airtight envelope calls for ventilation to be managed. The Lunos ventilation system changes the air in the house creating a healthy environment balancing the humidity and the CO2 levels day and night. This results in more restful sleep and less sickness.
The cladding and flooring was sourced from Cyclone Ida wind felled trees. These have been finished with natural non toxic oil. Plywood joinery is a feature throughout the house, separating and providing storage in the loft and the living room in lieu of a wall. Plywood also features as kitchen joinery. and bedroom robes.
The adjustable height dining room table created with rimu bearers from the old demolished house extends the kitchen bench space as required . This removes the need for an island bench creating a more compact versatile living space.
The addition of skylights and north facing windows adds a huge amount of natural light. We believe light and sun is closely connected to mental wellbeing. The sun when available heats the house even on a cold winters day. The consequence of this - the house requires very little heating. A heat pump was installed a year later to keep the house at a temperate climate every day of the year. Through the first winter. without heating the lowest temperature recorded was 16 degrees with a negative 5 frost outside.
The house does not have power bills for 8 months of the year. Power bills are generated in the winter because of the rates offered by the power company; buy price 27 cents, sell price 9 cents. The house, averaged over a calendar year, generates more power than it consumes. The largest power bill is $100 through the winter period. Power accounts will vary year upon year dependant on the sunshine hours across the winter months.
